Frequent Asked Questions

Because of the time constraints of a structured workout, we don't offer basic lessons. But our coaches can help you fine-tune your technique during a workout so that you can swim more efficiently. Occasionally we have stroke clinics during practice to help common problems most people have.

Not at all. We have about a 50/50 mix of fitness swimmers and competitors. Many of our members belong for the health and social benefits as well as the opportunity to compete.

We have fast and not-so-fast swimmers on the team. Swimmers are divided into several skill levels so that you swim only with people of similar abilities. Also many people who swim by themselves can benefit from some coaching. With just some minor adjustments to your technique, you might swim faster while expending less effort.

Many of our members come from just this background, so you're not alone in that respect. We realize that swimming with a group can be a daunting prospect especially if you've only swum alone. But the fitness benefits are worth the effort. We encourage new swimmers to take plenty of rest and not to push themselves to complete a workout. As with any sport, strength and endurance will increase with practice.

All sports and fitness activities have their own "lingo" to communicate quickly. Masters swimming has many that may not be familiar to the uninitiated. We have a somewhat exhaustive list of swimming terms that should help. If you need the definition of a term not listed there, contact us and we'll add it to the list.
